INTRODUCTION TO MEDIATION AND MODERATION CONCEPTS AND METHODS WEBINAR
On November 17, Tor Neilands, PhD will present in a webinar that is intended to move the understanding of how introduce three conceptual approaches to mediation analysis: the causal steps method popularized by the seminal 1986 publication of Baron and Kenny, mediation analysis conducted via parametric structural equation modeling (SEM), and causal mediation analysis. Each of these methods will be described and their strengths and limitations considered, as well as their availability in several computing packages. In addition, a short introduction to moderation concepts will be provided and analyses including both mediation and moderation will be discussed briefly. The presentation will conclude with a list of resources available to those who would like to learn more about these techniques.

Presenter Bio: Tor Neilands, PhD is the Leader of the UCSF Center for Aging in Diverse Communities’ Analysis Core and member of the Research Education Component. He is Professor in the Division of Prevention Science in the Department of Medicine at UCSF. He is an applied data analyst and statistician. His methodological areas of interest are multivariate statistical models for social and behavioral science research, specifically latent variable models for survey scale development and validation, as well as mixed effects (i.e., multilevel; HLM) models for clustered and longitudinal data, including dyadic data. His substantive interests include training the next generation of health equity researchers working in U.S. minority communities
