Ariel Washington, PhD, MSSW

MCUAAAR

Assistant Professor
Wayne State University

Dr. Washington is a tenure-track assistant professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI), and a Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) scientist at the Office of Cancer Health Equity and Community Engagement-KCI. Her research primarily focuses on addressing and reducing cancer health disparities across the cancer care continuum for historically marginalized communities. In her work she often centers community perspectives and social work ethics in her approaches to tackling the problem of cancer health disparities. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, Dr. Washington believes that not only can we continue to describe the problems of health disparities in cancer care continuum, but also to begin developing health equity focused solutions. She is excited for this new opportunity with MCUAAAR, and in further investigating the impact of race-based medical mistrust and discrimination on cancer prevention and control.
